With the Cheshire School Awards taking place last Wednesday, there was a danger that the rest of the week was going to be something of an anticlimax. Luckily, we had the pleasure of attending the Daily Post School Awards for North Wales! Coleg Cambria was the host, and on Thursday we made the trip over to their Connahs Quay campus for another fantastic occasion.
As the sister event to the Cheshire Awards, the Daily Post School Awards looks to celebrate the very best in education across North Wales, with schools across 5 counties in attendance on the day. Elin Fflur hosted the event for the third successive year and impressively talked us through the nominations bilingually.
(this might be a good time to mention that there are still spaces on our Welsh training courses in August!).
Jon took over presenting duties to announce the Excell Supply sponsored categories, with the Headteacher of the Year being won by Mrs Helen Newell Jones, Ysgol Dyffryn Dulas Corris, and Primary School of the Year going to Ysgol Gellifor. It was a particularly good afternoon for Ysgol Gellifor headteacher Richard Monteiro, who saw another school under his headship (Bryn Clwyd) pick up the Healthy Living Award earlier in the ceremony. As testament to the quality of the nominees this year, the judging panel could not reach a decision in one category, instead deciding to split the Inspirational Teacher of the Year award into a Primary and Secondary section, with Miss Sophie Porter from Ysgol Froncysyllte and David Bailey of Holyhead High School both being honoured.
