Excell Supply are currently recruiting for a Head of English Department based in Wem near Shrewsbury. The school caters to a range of children aged 9-16 with Special Educational Needs (SEN), specifically Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school provides non-residential education for up to 84 students with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). This school has a rich history of supporting vulnerable children, with a mission rooted in fostering a supportive, inclusive environment that promotes both academic and personal development.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Identify and address gaps in children’s reading abilities, using appropriate phonics methods.
Implement strategies across subjects to enhance reading comprehension.
Establish a school-wide “family reading” program.
Assist teachers in developing effective reading strategies in their subjects.
Create and implement a whole school literacy strategy to promote reading skills across all areas of the curriculum.
Support the school’s vision for high-quality SEMH practices and ensure it is embraced by all staff.
Contribute to school improvement plans and align them with national and local initiatives.
Identify strengths and weaknesses within the school and develop action plans for improvement.
Foster a teamwork culture that values everyone’s input.
Participate in self-evaluation and help colleagues enhance their teaching practices.
Take part in strategic planning and reviews for the school.
Engage in extracurricular activities.
Serve as a tutor for a group of students.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Degree in an English subject
- Successful English teaching experience in various age ranges at least one school.
Desirable:
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Experience working with children with SEMH needs.
Personal Attributes:
- Understanding how to meet children’s needs in their academic and personal development.
- A clear vision for the English department and the school.
