School Teachers and Leaders to Receive 5.5% Pay Rise, Reflecting Their Vital Role

In recognition of the crucial role they play in shaping the future of children and young people, school teachers and leaders in England will receive a fully funded 5.5% pay rise. This decision, aligned with the recommendations of the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB), will see schools receive an additional £1.2 billion in funding to cover the costs.

Investment in Education: A Commitment to the Future

This significant investment underscores the government’s dedication to education and its pledge to recruit 6,500 new teachers. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasised the immeasurable impact teachers have on students’ lives, stating, “Teachers lay the foundations of children’s lives. An investment in them is an investment in the next generation.”

While the Chancellor has highlighted the challenging economic climate necessitating difficult decisions in various sectors, the government recognises the value of the nation’s 6 million public servants and the importance of fair compensation.

Teacher Pay Rise

Pay Award Details and Additional Measures

With School teachers and leaders to receive the 5.5% pay rise, (equivalent to over £2,500 for the average teacher) the increase will take effect from September 1st, raising the median salary for 2024-2025 to over £49,000. This applies to maintained schools, while academies retain autonomy over their pay and conditions.

Furthermore, the government is taking steps to reduce teacher workload and enhance the appeal of the profession. The requirement for schools to use the performance-related pay system will be removed, streamlining the process for agreeing individual pay rises. Additionally, teachers will be allowed to conduct planning time at home, promoting flexible working arrangements.

Building a Stronger Relationship with the Education Sector

The Education Secretary has actively engaged with education stakeholders, aiming to foster a positive relationship and understand the needs of frontline staff. This includes direct communication through letters, receptions, and webinars, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and support for those working in education.

By prioritising fair pay, reducing administrative burdens, and fostering a positive working environment, the government aims to attract and retain talented educators, ultimately benefiting the educational outcomes of students across the country.
