Published on: Friday, 3rd May 2024

A New Year NQT checklist that will calm that inner-voice and get the first day fears back in their box!

Every single teacher that begins a new role, whether they have been teaching for one, or twenty years will get that feeling before they start.

It’s easy to think you’ll roll into it, but that first day will leave you with brain overload, an impressive to-do list and a thirst for stationery!

As we enter a new year, it is an exciting time for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and Early Careers Teachers (ECTs) embarking on their professional journey in the education sector. At Excell Supply, serving North Wales, Shropshire, The Wirral, and Cheshire, we understand the importance of starting your career on the right foot. To help you navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead, we have prepared a comprehensive New Year Checklist. This invaluable resource will guide you through key areas to focus on, ensuring a successful start to your teaching career!

  1. Reflect on Your Teaching Practice: Begin the year by reflecting on your teaching practice. Take time to evaluate your strengths and areas for improvement. Identify teaching strategies that worked well and consider how you can enhance your classroom management skills, lesson planning techniques, and student engagement methods. Self-reflection is a powerful tool for professional growth, and this exercise will set the foundation for your development as an NQT.  If you’re not sure you can reach out to our NQT / ECT Advisors by visiting our NQT section of the website here.
  2. Set Professional Goals: Goal setting is crucial for personal and professional growth. Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that align with your teaching aspirations. Whether it’s improving subject knowledge, incorporating technology in the classroom, or fostering stronger student-teacher relationships, setting clear objectives will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year.
  3. Establish Strong Support Networks: Building a strong support network is essential for NQTs. Seek out mentors, experienced colleagues, and fellow NQTs who can provide guidance, share best practices, and offer support during challenging times. At Excell Supply, we pride ourselves on connecting educators with like-minded professionals through our extensive network, enabling you to build valuable relationships within the education community.  If you’re an ECT/NQT in the process of signing up with us then keep an eye on your emails for our regular NQT Q&A drop-in sessions!
  4. Stay Abreast of Educational Trends: Education is a dynamic field, constantly evolving with new pedagogical approaches and technological advancements. Stay updated on the latest educational trends, research, and policy changes. Attend professional development workshops, webinars, and conferences to enhance your knowledge and bring fresh ideas into your classroom. Excell Supply provides access to a range of professional development opportunities to support your growth as an NQT.  We hold regular CPD Sessions!  Keep your eyes peeled!
  5. Utilise Available Resources: Take advantage of the vast array of educational resources at your disposal. Excell Supply offers our ‘Training Zone‘,  ensuring you have access to the tools you need to deliver engaging and effective lessons. Additionally, explore online platforms, educational websites, and professional networks to discover additional resources that align with your teaching style and subject area.
  6. Prioritise Work-Life Balance: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for your well-being as an NQT. Teaching can be demanding, but it’s essential to allocate time for self-care, relaxation, and pursuing hobbies outside the classroom. Excell Supply understands the importance of work-life balance and supports educators in achieving it. We strive to match NQTs with schools that match with their strengths and goals, enabling you to thrive both personally and professionally.
  7. Embrace Professional Development Opportunities: Continuous professional development is key to your growth as an educator. Seek out opportunities to expand your skill set, such as attending workshops, pursuing additional qualifications, or participating in research projects. Excell Supply offers a range of professional development programs designed to enhance your teaching practice and open doors to new career prospects.
